Salary: £27,000 per year (pro-rata)

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who is super-organised, loves working with children, has experience managing and mentoring staff, and feels confident leading large groups. The role includes pre-summer work from home (with regular meetings in Glasgow) and is fully residential during the summer.

About Camp Cooper

Camp Cooper is an American-style, international residential summer camp for ages 7–17. We welcome campers from around the world to build skills, make friends, and have a life-changing summer.

Role Summary

The Assistant Camp Manager supports all aspects of camp setup and delivery: leadership, staff hiring and training, programme development, logistics, pastoral care, and day-to-day operations.

Key Responsibilities

Pre-Summer Setup (January–June)

  • Recruit summer staff and manage pre-summer paperwork (e.g., background checks, contracts).

  • Plan all-camp activities and organise day trips.

  • Communicate with parents regarding paperwork and logistics.

  • Plan and deliver staff training.

  • Order equipment and organise camp paperwork and schedules.

  • Write policies and risk assessments.

  • Ensure compliance with health & safety regulations and accreditation requirements.

  • Carry out other tasks as needed to ensure a smooth launch.

Summer Delivery (June–August)

  • Live on-site in a residential capacity for the full programme.

  • Help oversee pastoral care of campers.

  • Support the management of the summer staff team.

  • Coordinate programme logistics and activity provision.

  • Handle camper/staff issues professionally and promptly.

  • Liaise with school site staff (e.g., catering teams).

  • Undertake any additional duties required to deliver a high-quality camp.

Experience & Skills Required

  • Experience working with children.

  • Experience in a management role at a summer camp or similar youth programme.

  • Proven ability to manage staff (circa 30 adults).

  • Confident public speaker: able to lead gatherings, training sessions, staff meetings, and all-camp activities (up to 150 people).

  • Capable of helping to oversee a large camp operation: approx. 100 campers and 30 staff at a time.

  • Strong focus on pastoral care, health & safety, good judgment, and parent communication.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • High resilience, calm under pressure, and a dynamic, solutions-focused approach.

Working at Camp Cooper

Setup Period (January–June)

  • Remote work from home.

  • 4-day week from January–1 April; 5-day week from April–June.

  • Typical hours: ~9am–5pm.

  • In-person meetings in Glasgow once or twice a month.

  • 1–2 Saturdays per month (January–May) for staff assessment days in Glasgow and England — TOIL provided.

  • Occasional evening work in May & June for staff training meetings.

Delivery Period (June–August; ~6–7 weeks)

  • Residential at one of our Scotland locations.

  • Long working hours (~8am–11pm) with breaks; one day off per week.

Other Information

  • No annual leave permitted during mid-June to August (camp delivery).

  • Duties may be amended as needed; flexibility to undertake additional tasks is essential.
